Question 1. Study the map given below. What are the different physical features represented here?

The map of Asia explicitly marks several prominent geographical and ecological regions:
- Tibetan Plateau: Labeled in south-central Asia, situated north of the Himalayas.
- Gobi Desert: Labeled in the east-central region.
- Eurasian Steppes: Labeled as a massive belt stretching from west to east.

- The countries that are part of the European Plain include France, Belgium, Netherlands, Germnay, Poland, Denmark, Belarus, Ukraine and Russia.
- The European Plain stretches across these countries and forms one of the largest flat and fertile regions in the world.
Question 3. On the map (Fig. 1.22) locate the course of the River Nile. Where does it originate from and in which direction does it flow? Turn to the political map at the end of the book, and identify some of the areas that the river flows through.
- The River Nile originates from the region around Lake Victoria in East Africa.
- It flows in a Northward direction, which is unusual as most rivers flow South.
- The river passes through countries such as South Sudan, Sudan, and Egypt.
- Finally, it drains into the Mediterranean Sea.
- The Nile and its basin have supported agriculture and settlements for thousands of years, especially in Egypt, where it helped in the development of ancient civilisation.
Question 4. The Amazon Rainforest has been called the ‘Lungs of the Earth’. Why do you think this might be so?
The Amazon Rainforest is called the “Lungs of the Earth” because it plays an important role in the global carbon cycle.
- Its vast forests absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and store carbon in plants and soils.
- The rainforest also releases oxygen through photosynthesis.
- It helps regulate the climate and water cycle of the region and the wider world.
Therefore, the Amazon is extremely important for maintaining the balance of Earth’s atmosphere and environment.
Question 5. The countries in this region need land for development but risk losing the Amazon Rainforest. Discuss in groups: What are the short and long-term effects of deforestation, and how can we protect the Amazon for the planet?
Deforestation may provide land for farming, roads, industries, and settlements, but it can cause serious environmental problems.
Short-Term Effects
- Forests are cleared to create land for agriculture and development.
- Many plants and animals lose their natural habitats.
- Burning and clearing forests can increase air pollution and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
- Soil can become exposed to erosion, especially during heavy rainfall.
- Indigenous communities may lose parts of their traditional lands and resources.
Long-Term Effects
- Continued deforestation can cause loss of biodiversity and the extinction of some species.
- It can increase global warming because fewer trees are available to absorb carbon dioxide.
- Changes in the forest can disturb the water cycle and rainfall patterns.
- Loss of forests can damage soil fertility and increase erosion.
- Large-scale deforestation can permanently change the Amazon ecosystem.
How Can We Protect the Amazon?
- Promote sustainable farming and forestry instead of clearing large areas of forest.
- Protect Indigenous lands and local communities, who have an important role in conserving the forest.
- Prevent illegal logging and uncontrolled land clearing.
- Plant trees and restore damaged forest areas.
- Encourage development that uses land and natural resources responsibly.
- International cooperation is needed to protect the Amazon while also supporting the economic needs of local people.
Therefore, development and environmental protection must be balanced so that the Amazon can continue to support people, wildlife, and the planet for future generations.

Question 1. Oceans give us almost half the oxygen we breathe. Tiny marine organisms, such as plankton, make this possible. What do you think would happen to all living beings if pollution harmed these planktons, and they could no longer produce enough oxygen?
If pollution seriously harmed plankton and other tiny marine organisms, they would produce less oxygen through photosynthesis.
- This could reduce the amount of oxygen added to the atmosphere over time.
- Marine animals that depend on plankton for food would also be affected, disturbing the entire ocean food chain.
- Fish and other sea animals could decline, affecting people who depend on the oceans for food and livelihoods.
- Pollution could also damage other marine ecosystems and reduce biodiversity.
Therefore, protecting plankton and keeping oceans clean is important for marine life and the health of the whole planet.

Question 1. Why do all map projections have some amount of distortion?
- The Earth is a three-dimensional, curved surface, while a map is a flat, two-dimensional surface.
- It is impossible to flatten the Earth without stretching, compressing, or changing some parts of its surface. Therefore, every map projection has some amount of distortion.
- Mercator Projection preserve the shape and direction of places but distort their size, while others preserve size but distort shape.
- The Robinson Projection is a compromise that balances different types of distortion to show the world more realistically.
Thus, no single map projection is perfect, so different projections are used for different purposes.
Question 2. What makes the Tibetan Plateau unique?
The Tibetan Plateau is a globally unique highland due to several outstanding geographical and ecological characteristics:
- It is the highest and largest plateau on Earth, standing at an average height of over 4,500 meters above sea level. It stretches approximately 2,500 km from east to west and 1,000 km from north to south.
- Located north of the Himalayan Range, it was formed by the colossal geological collision between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
- Scientists refer to it as the "Third Pole" because it holds the largest reserves of freshwater on Earth outside of the polar regions.
- It plays a critical role in influencing the climate of Asia and serves as the headwaters and source for major rivers such as the Indus, Brahmaputra, and Yangtze.
- Due to global warming, accelerated snow-melt on the plateau is causing existing lakes to expand and entirely new ones to form.
Question 3. Why are coral reefs called the ‘rainforests of the sea’?
- Coral reefs are ridges found near the ocean surface built by rock or tiny marine animals called corals.
- They are referred to as the "rainforests of the sea" because they are among the most diverse ecosystems on Earth.
- Despite covering a very small portion of the ocean floor, they provide essential food, shelter, and habitat for about one-quarter of all marine species, including a vast array of fish, crabs, turtles, and sponges.
Question 4. How do the oceans help to regulate the Earth’s climate?
- Oceans absorb heat from the sun and release it slowly, which moderates temperatures.
- They also add moisture to the air, which forms clouds and causes rainfall.
- Ocean currents (warm and cold) redistribute heat across the globe, affecting the climate of coastal regions.
- For example, the warm Gulf Stream keeps Western Europe warmer than other places at the same latitude.
Question 5. What is the main reason for the Great Barrier Reef facing threats today?
- The Great Barrier Reef faces threats mainly from human activities — overfishing, pollution, and climate change.
- Rising ocean temperatures and changes in water chemistry cause coral bleaching, in which corals lose their colour and die, destroying the habitat of countless marine species.
Question 6. Why is the Amazon Rainforest often called the ‘Lungs of the Earth’?
- The Amazon Rainforest produces a very large share of the world's oxygen through photosynthesis by its vast number of trees, and it absorbs enormous quantities of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
- This oxygen-producing, carbon-absorbing role — similar to lungs exchanging gases in the human body — is why it earns this nickname. However, deforestation threatens this vital function.
Question 7. Choose two different types of geographical features you have explored in this chapter. Write short paragraphs on how they influence the flora and fauna or human lives in that area. Do they also have an implication for the whole globe?
1 — The Andes Mountains:
- The Andes feed major rivers, including the Amazon, providing freshwater to millions of people.
- They are home to thousands of species of mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles, many unique to the region, though only about one-fourth of the original flora and fauna remains today — making the Andes a critical conservation hotspot.
- The mountains are also rich in copper, zinc, silver, and lithium, resources of global economic importance, especially for batteries and modern technology.
2 — The Sahara Desert:
- The Sahara's extreme heat and low rainfall have shaped unique adaptations in plants and animals, such as water-storing cacti and the heat-dissipating fennec fox.
- Nomadic communities have herded livestock and used ancient trade routes carrying gold and salt for centuries.
- Globally, dust blown from the Sahara travels as far as the Amazon Rainforest, carrying phosphorous that nourishes its plants — showing how distant ecosystems are interconnected.
Question 8. Discuss how oceans influence climate and trade. Use examples from the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Climate:
- The Indian Ocean's warm waters influence the monsoon patterns that bring rainfall to the Indian subcontinent, directly affecting agriculture.
- The Pacific Ocean, being the largest, plays a major role in global weather patterns and ocean currents that distribute heat worldwide.
Trade:
- The Indian Ocean has historically been a hub of international trade, connecting Africa, the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia.
- The Pacific Ocean, being the largest and busiest, supports massive container shipping routes linking Asia, the Americas, and Australia, making it central to global commerce today.
Question 9. Choose one environmental issue (deforestation, reef bleaching, or desertification) and explain its causes, impacts, and possible solutions.
Issue: Coral Reef Bleaching
- Causes: Rising ocean temperatures due to climate change, ocean pollution, and changes in water chemistry (e.g., ocean acidification).
- Impacts: Loss of coral colour and death of coral; destruction of habitat for about one-quarter of all marine species; loss of livelihoods for coastal and fishing communities; decline in tourism.
- Possible solutions: Reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally, controlling ocean pollution, creating marine protected areas, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and raising public awareness about reef conservation.
Question 10. Imagine you are a geographer asked to advise a government about protecting one major landscape in your country. Which one would you choose, and why?
As a geographer in India, I would advise the government to prioritize the comprehensive protection of the Western Ghats because,
- They are one of India’s most important natural landscapes.
- They are rich in forests and biodiversity and are home to many rare plants and animals.
- They also receive heavy rainfall and help maintain rivers and water supplies for many parts of India.
Protecting the Western Ghats would reduce deforestation, soil erosion, and loss of wildlife habitats. Therefore, I would promote afforestation, control harmful construction and mining, and encourage sustainable tourism in the region.
Question 11. Imagine that someone is funding a group of you for a road trip across two continents. There are differences of opinion on which two they should be. Make a pitch for the ones you would like everyone to go to. Use a blank map, trace your route and locate the places on it, and try to convince the others to your point of view. You could use a variety of creative ways.
Road Trip Pitch: Across Asia and Europe
- "Friends, we have the chance of a lifetime to road-trip across Asia and Europe—two continents connected by history, climate, and geography!
- Our route will start on the Tibetan Plateau ('Roof of the World'), where we will stand at an average altitude of 4,500 meters amidst the massive glaciers of the 'Third Pole'. From there, we will drive northeast into the chilly, Martian landscapes of the Gobi Desert, experiencing the sunny but freezing winters of Mongolia.
- Heading north, we will cross the endless, golden horizons of the Eurasian Steppes—an 8,000 km flat grassland where we can stay in traditional yurts with local nomads.
- Next, we will cross the ancient Ural Mountains. This 2,500 km range is the natural physical boundary dividing Asia and Europe. We will drive through the stunning coniferous Siberian taiga and see the stark beauty of the summer tundra.
- Crossing into Europe, our road trip will take us across the vast, rolling plains of the European Plain, passing through historic capitals like Moscow, Berlin, and Paris. Finally, we will wind our way through the spectacular, crescent-shaped Alps, surrounded by oak forests, alpine wildlife, and fields of the beautiful Edelweiss flower.
