Solutions
Question 1. Choose the correct option and complete the sentences.
(a) Ice is the …………state of water.
(solid, liquid, gas)
Ice is the solid state of water.
(b) When light rays fall on an opaque substance, ………….
(Some light passes through, all light passes through, light does not pass through)
When light rays fall on an opaque substance, light does not pass through.
(c) Oil floats on water; this means the density of oil is …………water.
(less than, equal to, greater than)
Oil floats on water; this means the density of oil is less than water.
Question 2. Which of the following statements represent the solid and gaseous states respectively?
(a) Particles are very close to each other and hold each other tightly.
(b) Particles are slightly further apart and loosely bound.
(c) Particles scatter everywhere in the available space.
Solid: (a) Particles are very close to each other and hold each other tightly. Gaseous: (c) Particles scatter everywhere in the available space. (Statement (b) describes the liquid state.)
Question 3. Observe the relationship in the first pair and complete the second pair.
(a) Glass : Transparent substance :: Butter paper : …………
Glass : Transparent substance :: Butter paper : Translucent substance
(b) Solid : Has a specific shape :: Liquid : …………
Solid : Has a specific shape :: Liquid : Takes the shape of its container (has no shape of its own)
Question 4. Stand close to the mirror and look at your face. Now exhale onto the mirror. What difference do you see? What could be the reason for it?
The mirror becomes misty/foggy and our image becomes blurred. Reason: Our breath contains water vapour (gas). When it touches the cooler mirror, it cools and condenses into tiny water droplets (liquid). After some time the droplets evaporate and the mirror becomes clear again.
Question 5. There are two boxes of the same size. One is filled with stones and the other with small pieces of sponge. Without opening the boxes, how will you identify which box contains what?
Lift both boxes. The box of stones is much heavier because stones have greater density (more mass in the same volume). The sponge box is lighter. Both boxes have the same volume but different mass.
Question 6. Identify the group in which all the substances are in the liquid state.
(a) Stone, water, smoke
(b) Milk, oil, sherbet
(c) Air, iron, steam
(b) Milk, oil, sherbet. (Group (a) has stone- a solid, and smoke; group (c) has air- a gas, iron- a solid, and steam.)
Question 7. From the following, which are transparent and which are translucent? Make two separate lists. Piece of glass, butter paper, notebook-cardboard, plastic sheet, sandpaper, oiled paper.
Transparent: piece of glass, plastic sheet (clear). Translucent: butter paper, oiled paper. (Notebook-cardboard and sandpaper are opaque, so they are in neither list.)
Question 8. Onion fritters (Kanda-bhaji) are being made in the neighbor’s house and you came to know this without going there. What is the connection between this and the states of matter?
The aroma of the fritters consists of tiny particles in the gaseous state. Gas particles are independent and scatter in all directions and travel long distances through the air, so they reach our nose even from far away, just like the fragrance of an incense stick.
Question 9. If a liquid has a volume of 3 ml and a mass of 7.5 grams, what will be its density?
Volume = 3 ml = 3 cm³; Mass = 7.5 g Density = \(\frac{Mass}{Volume}=\frac{7.5}{3}\) = 2.5 g/cm³
Question 10. Nowadays, a different type of glass is used for windows in newly constructed buildings. From the outside during the day, these look like coloured mirrors. Objects inside the room cannot be seen from the outside. However, those inside can see outside through the window. What should these glasses be called: Transparent, Opaque or Translucent?
Translucent. The glass does not let all light pass (so it is not fully transparent) but it does not block all light either (so it is not opaque). It reflects much of the outside light and lets only part of the light through. Check with your teacher: some may also describe it as transparent from inside and opaque-looking from outside. Translucent is the best answer from the three given options.
Question 11. A thin dark film is stuck to car windows. What happens due to this?
(a) The glass becomes more transparent.
(b) The glass becomes opaque.
(c) The glass becomes translucent.
(c) The glass becomes translucent. The dark film cuts down the light passing through, so the glass allows only a little light through.
Question 12. Which one will have a greater volume,1kg cotton or 1 kg of iron?
1 kg of cotton has the greater volume. Cotton has a much lower density, so the same mass takes up much more space. (Volume = .)
Question 13. If 1 kg of cotton and 1 kg of iron are placed in the two pans of a balance scale, which pan will go down?
Neither. Both have the same mass (1 kg), so the balance stays level. Only the volume differs, not the mass.
Question 14. Several measuring instruments are shown in the picture.
- Make two separate groups of instruments that measure volume and mass.
- Which of these instruments must be transparent? Why?
Measure mass: spring balance, pan (beam) balance, weighing machine, large platform balance. Measure volume: measuring cylinder, injection syringe, measuring jug/cup. (The clock measures time and the tape and ruler measure length, so they belong to neither group.) Transparent instruments: measuring cylinder, injection syringe and measuring jug, because the liquid level inside must be seen from outside against the markings.
