The Ever-Evolving World of Science

NCERT-Class-7-Science (Curiosity)-Chapter-1

Notes

How does science help us improve our thinking? :

  • Science helps us think in a better and logical way.
  • It starts with curiosity and involves observing, asking questions, and finding answers through reasoning.
  • Science is all around us — in cooking, gardening, machines, and even in how our body grows.
Learning science means doing experiments, sharing ideas, and connecting what we learn to real life.
  • Asking the right questions is very important because it helps us understand things more deeply.

The Interconnected Nature of Science :

Branches of Science :
Science is divided into different parts like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Earth Science. But all these branches are connected to each other.

For example:

  • When we study water, we learn about its states like solid, liquid, and gas (Physics), its chemical nature (Chemistry), how it supports living things (Biology), and how it moves in nature (Earth Science).
  • When we observe the sky, we study how the Earth moves (Physics and Astronomy), how this movement changes the weather (Earth Science), and how it affects plants and animals (Biology).

Understanding one area often leads to questions in another. This interconnectedness makes science an interesting field of study.

Importance of Science :

Science is very important because it helps us understand the world around us. It makes us curious, helps us ask questions, and find answers. Here's how science helps in our daily life:

(1) Properties of Materials :

Science helps us know why:

  • A lemon tastes sour
  • A turmeric stain turns red when washed with soap
It teaches us about the things we use every day like fruits, clothes, and soaps.

(2) Electricity and Conductivity :

When we connect batteries, wires, and bulbs:

  • Science helps us learn how electricity flows
  • It tells us which materials allow electricity to pass (like metal) and which do not (like plastic)

(3) Changes Around Us :

Science explains:

  • Reversible changes: like melting ice (can be changed back)
  • Irreversible changes: like burning paper or ripening fruit (cannot be changed back)

(4) Heat and Water Cycle :

Science helps us understand:

  • How heat melts glaciers
  • How water moves in nature (evaporation, condensation, rain)
  • How heat affects weather and seasons

(5) Growth and Life Processes :

Science explains:

  • How our body grows, breathes, and digests food
  • How plants grow using sunlight, water, and air
It helps us understand how living things survive.

(6) Measurement and Time :

  • Long ago, people used the position of the shadows to tell time.
  • Now we use clocks and watches
Science has improved how we measure time accurately.

(7) Light and Shadows :

Light helps us see छ

  • When something blocks light, it creates a shadow
  • Big shadows in space cause eclipses
  • We have day and night because the Earth spins

(8) Movements of Earth and Moon :

Science explains:

  • The Moon moves around the Earth
  • The Earth moves around the Sun
    These movements cause:
  • Phases of the Moon
  • Seasons
  • Sunrise and Sunset

Glossary of Key Terms :

Term Definition
Science Described not as a collection of facts, but as an ongoing process of discovery and a way of thinking that welcomes curiosity, asks questions, and is open to the unknown.
Exploration The act of questioning, performing experiments, and seeking to understand the world. It involves hands-on activities that serve as stepping stones to deeper understanding.
Scientific Fields Different areas of science, including physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. The text emphasizes that these fields are interconnected, with ideas in one area inspiring discoveries in another.
Properties of Materials The characteristics of substances that are explored through questions and experiments. Examples include why fruits are sour, what happens to a haldi (turmeric) stain when washed, and which materials conduct electricity.
Reversible and Irreversible Changes A classification for changes observed in the world. Some changes, like a battery running out or a fruit ripening, cannot be reversed, while others, like ice melting, can be.
Heat Flow The movement of heat, which causes physical changes in the environment. Examples given include the melting of an ice cube in a glass and the melting of a glacier.
Life Processes Activities essential for the survival and growth of all animals. The text lists eating, breathing, and the circulation of blood as key examples.
Eclipses Astronomical phenomena caused when the Earth and the Moon cast shadows upon each other, explained through the principles of light and shadow.
Scientific Inquiry The method of thinking like a scientist. The text highlights that this involves not only finding answers but, equally importantly, asking creative, curious, and insightful questions.
